How does Photodisinfection Work?

Photodisinfection is a topical, non-antibiotic antimicrobial therapy that destroys a broad spectrum of pathogens including fungi, bacteria and virus without damaging human tissue. Unlike antibiotics, Photodisinfection selectively kills virulence factors such as the endotoxins and exotoxins produced by pathogens, leading to a clinically observable anti-inflammatory effect. The treatment process takes only minutes, making it over 1,000 times more effective at biofilm killing than antibiotics.

Photodisinfection is a minimally invasive non-thermal therapy involving the light activation of a photosensitizer to eliminate topical infections in a highly targeted approach. Photodisinfection has been proven to be safe and effective in other applications such as for the dental, sinusitis and hospital acquired infection prevention markets. In dentistry, Photodisinfection has been proven to be highly effective for the treatment of caries, endodontics, restorative dentistry, periodontitis, peri-implantitis and halitosis. Many new applications of Photodisinfection are now under development.

The Photodisinfection Process: Instant Antimicrobial Therapy

Apply Photosensitizer to Infection Site & Illuminate with Appropriate Wavelength for Several Minutes

A photosensitizing solution is applied to the treatment site where the photosensitizer molecules preferentially bind to the targeted microbes.  The photosensitizer molecules are inactive at this stage.  A light of a specific wavelength and intensity illuminates the treatment site and a photocatalytic reaction occurs.  The wavelength is carefully chosen to maximize absorption of light energy by the photosensitizer.

This 2 step procedure results in the destruction of the targeted microbes and their virulence factors without damaging host cells.  This reaction involves the formation of short-lived, highly reactive free-radical oxygen species.  These radicals cause a physical disruption of the microbial cell membrane through oxidative reactions, resulting in immediate rupture and destruction of the cell.  This process occurs in seconds with total kills completed in minutes.

The Photodisinfection process has also been shown to eliminate a multitude of virulence factors, unlike antibiotics. When the light isremoved, the photocatalytic reaction ceases along with all antimicrobial action. Photodisinfection does not promote the development of resistance.

The Photodisinfection process is both pain-free and stress-free due to lack of side-effects or damage to human tissue.

Periowave’s Coming To Mexico!

Mexico has long since been one of my favourite countries due primarily to her warm and vibrant people. I have a history with business in Mexico going back over 20 years when I was a portfolio manager for a large Canadian bank. It was with great pleasure therefore that I attended the recent annual Mexican Periodontal Association Conference held in Guadalajara earlier this month.

The reason for my pride was that our Periowave Photodisinfection system had just been cleared by the Mexican regulatory authorities and Periowave was holding its first ever lecture workshops in Mexico at this annual conference for periodontal specialists. Our Chief Technology Officer, Dr Nicolas Loebel, presented 5 lectures over the 3 days that we were there.

For me personally, it was hugely rewarding to see the impact on the level of interest by the attending clinicians who came poised with the anticipated questions related to scientific evidence, supporting clinical data and treatment protocols. For these clinicians, it was Read more »

Periowave Video Blog #1: How Is Periowave Integrated Into A Dental Practice?

So, we’re pretty excited about this!

Have you ever wondered how Periowave is used in a dental office? Well, look no further. We’re giving you a behind-the-scenes look at how dentists and hygienists integrate Periowave into their practice. In the first video blog, the staff from Unionville Gate Family Dentists share with us what it was like getting trained by the Periowave team and how it felt to treat their very first patient.

“My first patient was a lady in her 60s. Her main concern was a lot of bleeding… the gum was very, very swollen and she couldn’t get it under control… The first Periowave treatment was simple and really straightforward. The patient’s healing was quite noticeable, almost immediately!”

The next few videos we have planned will cover Periowave protocol, technique, and patient education. If you have any suggestions for topics you’d like to see, be sure to let us know in the comments below. In the meantime, check out what Dr. Erwood and his hygienist Sidney have to say about Periowave!

Periowave™ Case Study #2 – Gingival Inflammation and Tooth Loss

This is the case of a 55-year-old Hispanic woman who presented with a complaint of sore gums and tooth loss. The patient was in otherwise good health with no serious medical problems noted or observed.

The dental examination showed the upper arch to consist of teeth 13, 11, 21, and 23. The patient had a poorly fitting maxillary acrylic appliance. The lower arch was intact with no restorative problems. The lower arch had moderate calculus formation, but few signs of clinical inflammation; probing pocket depths were generally 3- 4 mm. Radiographs showed normal bone levels. The maxillary teeth exhibited severe inflammation with engorgement and bleeding.

Periowave™ Treatment and Results

The lower arch responded to routine scaling and root planing. However, because of the severe maxillary inflammation, the PeriowaveTM system was used for one session immediately after scaling. The acrylic partial appliance was relined with a soft liner as a temporary measure. Within 14 days, the upper teeth responded to SRP and adjunctive PeriowaveTM treatment, with a complete resolution of inflammation.

Étude De Cas Periowave™ – Nous Rendre Visite Au JDIQ Pour En Savoir Plus

Periowave™ Case Study #1 – Generalized Severe Bleeding On Probing

My patient was a 30-year-old Caucasian woman who complained of bleeding gums over the previous 12 months. She described severe bleeding with eating or brushing.

Her medical history revealed no significant findings. She had recently undergone a complete medical examination with extensive laboratory testing with no significant findings. She had tried seeing a naturopathic physician and had tried a non-yeast diet for the control of her gingival bleeding with no improvement. She was on no medications.

The dental examination revealed generalized severe bleeding on probing. Pocket probing depths were in the 4 mm range, except for a 7 mm pocket distofacial #13, and a 5 mm pocket mesiofacial #23. Minimal plaque deposits were found and her home care was good. This patient had a history of regular 6-month scaling and there was minimal calculus. Her last scaling was within one month with no improvement. There was little to no clinical inflammation. Occlusion, tooth position, and mobility patterns were normal. No restorative problems were noted.

Perspectives of Periowave™ – Views From A Registered Dental Hygienist

This week is National Dental Hygienists Week. It marks a fantastic opportunity to highlight the important role dental hygienists play in maintaining good oral health. As prevention professionals, we help patients understand how oral hygiene is more than just teeth, and that gum care is key in their overall health. As many of you may already know, gum disease continues to be the #1 cause of tooth loss in adults, and over half of all people today over the age of 30 have some form of this disease.

As a practicing dental hygienist in a periodontal practice in Saskatchewan for almost 30 years, I have treated thousands of patients that present with cases of severe gum disease. For many years now, I have believed that we have been missing something in the treatment of periodontal disease. Scaling and root planing, or periodontal debridement, is not 100% effective and patients are very keen on avoiding painful periodontal surgery. In my heart of hearts, I thought that there would be some ‘magical antibiotic’ that we would be able to prescribe patients. But this was not the case, and I realized that there had to be a better solution for my patients.

"Not only are we winning the battle against gum disease, with Periowave we are winning the war"
